what is basso continuo?
baroque conposers wouod write the bass line of the music with numbers written underneath. The cello player would play the written notes and the harpsichord player would ‘fill out’ the chords using the numbers as a guide

a recurrent musical section that alternatives with different episodes of contrasting material

the harpsichord was a popular keyboard instrument in the Baroque period, with its distinctive plucked sound
what is the Baroque orchestra mainly made up of?
it was mainly made up of string players and whatever wind instruments were available. the conductor of the orchestra would also play the harpsichord

contrast is the difference between parts or different instrument sounds
