Bargaining model of war Flashcards
1
Q
What are the components of the bargaining model?
A
- The good being bargained over
- The potential outcome of the war
- Costs of war
2
Q
What is the bargaining range?
A
The costs of war create a bargaining range of outcomes that both parties prefer over war.
3
Q
How is the bargaining range determined?
A
The bargaining range includes any outcome that is beyond the value of war for the parties involved.
4
Q
What might cause the bargaining range to change?
A
- Costs and value of war may change
Due to… - Availability of new information
- New actors
- Actors dropping out
5
Q
What are some explanations for bargaining failure?
A
- Incomplete information (mostly regarding actors’ resolve and capabilities)
- Commitment problems (preventative wars and preemptive wars)
- Issue indivisibility (an indivisible good cannot be divided without destroying its value)
6
Q
Why is issue indivisibility a bad explanation for bargaining failure?
A
What appears to be indivisibility may actually be a commitment problem. Indivisible goods are rare. Claiming a good to be indivisible may be a strategy that actors use to tie hands.
