Banduras Social Learning Theory Flashcards
1
Q
What is banduras social learning theory?
A
- Individuals imitate the behaviour in their social environment.
- People observe their peers and family, and then use their conduct as a role model that is then imitated.
2
Q
What is a key concept of Banduras theory?
A
- Children will imitate the social behaviours they are exposed to. (Boob doll study)
3
Q
Who are children most influenced by?
A
- Children are most influenced by adults
4
Q
What is observational learning?
A
- Children will imitate or reject certain behaviours based on the consequences they see for those adults.
5
Q
What was the Bobo doll experiment?
A
- Bandura made videos of adults beating up a bobo doll.
- He then showed a group of children the videos.
- The children were then given a bobo doll, and they treated the doll the same way as the adults.
6
Q
What was Bandura trying to discover about the children?
A
If the children would imitate the adults behaviour
7
Q
What did the childrens behaviour show?
A
That children learn through other people/adults
8
Q
What criticism did Bandura receive about the experiment? How did he change it after the criticism?
A
- The children didn’t know how to play with the doll beforehand
- He showed some children the video and let them play with doll with children who hadn’t seen it.
- The children who had seen the video behaved more violently than those that hadn’t.
9
Q
Positives of Banduras theory?
A
- His theory is based on experiments rather than a correlational study.
- Reliable
- Practical application
10
Q
Weaknesses of Banduras theory?
A
-Ethical issues - the children are exposed to violence with the knowledge that they will imitate that behaviour
- not valid
- low ecological validity
