Explain the ripple effect.
When the impact of a crime can spread further beyond the immediate victim.
Negative consequence
Example - knife crime.
Explain decriminalisation.
When the punishment of a crime is lessened.
Both positive and negative.
Positive - can help people to get help
Negative - can push people to commit crimes
Example - decriminalisation of drugs in Portugal.
Explain police prioritisation.
When the police give importance to certain crimes due to their impact on society or public concern.
Negative - means the police won’t focus on other crimes.
Example - Broken Windows Theory.
Explain cultural change.
How norms and values change in society.
Negative - crimes aren’t reported or recognised.
Example - FGM
Explain legal change.
A change in law. Happens when people are disinterested in a crime, don’t see a crime as a crime, or certain acts are seen as problematic.
Positive and negative.
Example - Homosexuality

Procedural change is when police change how people report crimes.
Positive - encourages people to report crimes.
Example - same-sex doctors, video links for court, witness protection, and the number 101.
