bandura 1961 Flashcards
what was the aim of banderas study 1961
to see if subjects who were exposed to aggressive models would reproduce aggressive acts resembling their models and those exposed to non aggressive models and those who had no modelled behaviour wouldn’t produce aggressive acts and to see if boys will be more aggressive
what was the sample of banderas study 1961
36 boys and 36 girls enrolled in stanford university nursery school
mean age of 52 months
ranged from 37-69 months old
1 male and 1 female were the role models
1 female experimenter conducted the study for all 72 kids
what was the method of banderas study 1961
matched pairs design
what were the independent variables of banderas study 1961
condition the children were exposed to
sex of the role model
sex of the child
how were the groups organised in banduras study 1961
by aggressive or non aggressive role model
gender of role model
gender (6 girls and 6 boys in each group)
what was the procedure (stage 1) of banduras study 1961
taken to a room with activities that nursery children were interested in
one corner had a child’s play area(table, potato prints, picture stickers)
adult model was escorted to the opposite corner with a tinker toy set, mallet, 5 foot inflatable bobo doll
experimenter left the room
the model either ignored bobo and played with the toys or they began playing with the toys and after a min was aggressive to bobo
after 10 mins the experimenter entered and took the child to a new room
what was the procedure (stage 2) of banduras study 1961
child was subjected to mild aggression arousal
they were taken to a room with relatively attractive toys and as they began to play with them they were taken away because those toys were reserved for other kids as they were the best toys
what was the procedure (stage 3) of banduras study 1961
child was taken to a new room where they could play with many toys
aggressive toys- 3 foot bobo doll, mallet, peg board, 2 dart guns, tether ball with a face painted on it hanging from the ceiling
non aggressive toys- tea set, crayons and colouring paper, a ball, 2 dolls, 3 bears, plastic farm animals, cars and trucks
child was kept in the room for 20 mins and observed through a one way mirror
observations were made at 5 second intervals
imitation of physical and verbal aggression and non physically verbal responses were measured
what were the results of banduras study 1961
children in the aggressive model made more aggressive responses
boys had more physically aggressive responses
no difference in verbal aggression between boys and girls
girls in aggressive model conditions showed more physical aggressive responses if the model was male and verbally aggressive responses if the model was female
