bandura Flashcards
what was the aim of this experiment
to investigate whether exposure to a real life aggressive model increases aggression in children
what was the procedure
72 children- 36 male, 36 female between the ages 3 and 5
8 experimental groups of six children 24 in control group
experimental group watched an aggressive/ non aggressive role model of the same or different sex to themselves
groups were matched for physical and verbal aggression from ratings made by the experimenter and the nursery school teacher
what happened in room 1
child was brought in, invited a model in, child placed ina corner and shown how to design a picture
model= opposite corner had bobo doll- experimenterleft
child could only watch the model and overheard the experimenter tell the model it was their play area and the child had no accesssto it
what happened in room 1 when the model was playing with the toys
started to act aggressively towards the bobo doll
in room 1 what happened in the non aggressive condition
the model would simply continue to play with the other toys given
in room one when the physical aggression was displayed by the model what did the children do after the children were moved into another room
the children first were given toys then had them taken away so the children were in a frustrated mood
what happened in room 3
taken into experimental room allowed to play with a variety of aggressive and non aggressive toys i
how were the children observed in room 3
by a one way mirror
what were the results for this experiment
the children that were exposed to an aggressive role model displayed significantly more direct imitation than child exposed to a non aggressive model
what was the conclusion to this experiment
a child exposed to an aggressive model is likely to display aggression and to imitate aggressive acts. boys are more aggressive than girls overall but are less likely to copy aggressive behaviour from a female model
how do children learn through
association
what does this experiment ignore
the genetic basis for aggression so not all children copy aggression from violent media so there must be factors influencing this
generalisability
only 3-5 year olds os low as the children were from an american nursery irs unlikely we can generalise the results beyond this sample
reliability
number of observers & only shared and agreed behaviours were presented so reliability is established so standardised procedure can be replicated
application to real life
contributed to the understanding of how children acquire behaviour through observing othwea study highlights how non aggressive models in the media can encourage helpful behaviour
