Bandaging Flashcards
If a bandage is not placed in a uniform manner, what problems may we encounter?
Abraisons,
bandage “bow”,
trauma to flexor tendons
When applying bandages, it’s important to remember to fully span the wound to minimize edema formation at the margin and pull the flexor tendons medially. Why is this important?
Minimizes the risk of tendinitis,
protects tendons
How might we manage a horse with a subsolar abscess presenting acutely with a grade 5 lameness?
FOOT bandage
place hyperosmotic gel on foot,
can use a diaper, then cover it with duct tape (pre-made as a square).
The primary layer of a bandage is secured with ________; whereas the secondary is secured with ______, and the tertiary, ______.
conforming roll gauze (kling);
conforming (brown) gauze;
Elastikon (seals it!)
What are the landmarks for placing a distal limb bandage?
extends from just below carpus/tarsus—>below coronary band
What type of bandage would we use for
large wounds,
swelling/cellulitis,
and coaptation for temporary fracture stabilization ?
Full limb / “stack” bandage
What type of bandage extends from below the coronary band —> proximal to carpus/tarsus?
Stack Bandage!
after placing secondary layer, “stack” another cotton above,
covering the proximal aspect of the 1st cotton
What are the key features of a Robert Jones bandage?
Preserves blood supply and supports fracture;
layers & layers of cotton required (size should be ~2x size of limb);
can incorporate a splint to add rigidity;
heavy & expensive
What type of splint would be a good option for phalangeal fracture?
Kimzey
How would we stabilize a radial fracture in the equine patient?
Robert Jones Bandage,
Palmar splint from heels to elbow,
Lateral splint from hoof to withers
second splint helps prevent limb from abducting
When we see olecranon fractures, we lose function of the triceps and cannot maintain limb in extension. How should we stabilize these cases?
Stack bandage + palmar splint
{splint extends from heels to top of elbow}
