Ballistics and firearms Flashcards
What is ballistics?
The scientific study of a projectile in flight.
What is interior ballistics?
The study of projectiles in weapons.
What is the study of exterior ballistics?
The study of projectiles in the air.
What is the study of terminal ballistics?
The study of projectile penetration of solids.
What is the study of terminal ballistics?
The study of projectile penetration of tissues.
What type of energy is released when a projectile leaves a firearm?
Kinetic energy.
What is the relationship between kinetic energy and the wounding potential?
The greater the kinetic energy of the projectile the greater the wounding potential of the tissue.
What does it mean if a projectile does not leave the body?
All the kinetic energy from the projectile has been transferred to the tissues.
What does it mean if a projectile enters the body and exits the body?
Only some of the kinetic energy has been transferred to the tissues.
What is the definition of a firearm?
A lethal barrelled weapon of any description from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged.
What re the three roles of a firearm?
- To discharge the projectile with sufficient energy to kill.

- What is or fired from a gun
What are the components of ammunition?
- Cartridge case
- Primer
- Propellent
- Bullet
What are the five components of a bullet?
- Bullet
- Cartridge
- Propellent
- Rim
- Primer
What is a bullet?
- Part of the ammunition that is projected from the firearm.
- Can be made out of nickel, copper or zinc.
What is a cartridge?
- A metal or plastic casing which contains the primer and propellent.
What is a propellent?

What is a rim?
- Contains the details of the calibre and manufacture of the bullet.
What is a primer?
- A mixture of compound that explode when they are compressed and they ignite the propellent.
