Balence Flashcards
The organization of a composition so that the parts on one side of the central axis mirror the parts on the other side.
Symmetrical balence
A Principle of Design that deals with the pleasing distribution of visual weight
Balence
The organization of a composition with the parts being unequal on either side of the central axis but still visually balanced.
Asymmetrical balance
The organization of the parts of a composition that are
similar but not identical on either side of the central axis.
Approximate symmetry
A composition that is based on a circle, with the design radiating from a central point.
Radial balance
An element of art that is two-dimensional and encloses area.
Shape
An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume
Form
A shape such as a triangle, or rectangle that can be defined precisely by mathematical coordinates and measurements.
Geometric shape
A shape that is free form or irregular; the opposite of geometric shape.
Organic shape
The areas containing the subject matter in an artwork; the objects depicted, as opposed to the background or space around those objects.
Positive shape
The area of an artwork not occupied by the subject matter, but which contribute to the composition. In two-dimensional art, the negative space is usually the background.
Negative shape
forms will describe action and movement. Often, the arrangement of the forms are positioned diagonally.
Active shapes
forms are motionless and stable. Their direction is usually horizontal or vertical. They evoke quiet and calm feelings.
Static shapes
An element of art that describes an artwork’s actual or implied surface quality, such as rough, smooth, or soft.
