Balancing Equations Flashcards
solution
- a mixture of one or more substances dissolved into another (homogeneous) - cannot tell one substance from another
What are the parts of a solution?
solute and solvent
What is a solute?
substance being dissolved in a solution
What is a solvent?
substance that is shown in a solution
suspension
a mixture of solute particles temporarily suspended in the solvent, but do not dissolve and eventually sink to bottom (heterogeneous)
colloid
a mixture of one or more solute particles permanently suspended in the solvent (do not dissolve or settle, constant movement)
What are physical properties?
characteristics that can be observed without changing the substance, usually deal with physical appearance
What are chemical properties?
deal with how substance can react, usually require a change in the substance in order to be observed
What are physical changes?
substance remains the same, only appearance changes
What are chemical changes?
result in production of a new substance, substance is changed
What are the ways to identify chemical change?
- temperature change - gas production - precipitate production (solid comes out of 2 liquids) - color change is not predicted
subscript
Na2
superscript
Na2
radical
2 or 3 elements connected to each other (in a formula) that act as 1 solution (parentheses needed in formula)
What is the formula for balancing equations?
__reactant + __reactant → __product + __product
