Baddeley's Working Memory Flashcards
Working memory
A system for processing or working with current information across a range of tasks
Difference to Atkinson-Shiffrin model
STM and working memory are NOT interchangeable as the others proposed
Functions of working memory
Hold information for short periods of time
Execute processes such as encoding numbers and applying rules in their correct sequence
Capacity of working memory
Limited.
What does it hold?
The last few things noticed in the environments information from LTM or current thinking processes
Can be filled with recycling items currently in memory - memory rehearsal
4 main components:
- Central executive
- Phonological loop
- Visuo-spatial sketchpad
- Episodic buffer
Central executive
Main coordinating system and it controls the operations of working memory
Phonological loop
Stores and rehearses speech information and more or less corresponds to Arkinson + Shiffrin’s STM
Visio-spatial sketchpad
Stores and manipulates visual and spatial information and is limited to about 4 items
Episodic buffer
Helps retrieve information from LTM to associate with information which is in working memory and to select and encode information into LTM
