baddeley 1966b Flashcards
what was the aim of the study?
to investigate the effect of acoustic and semantic similarity of words on recall and learning in the long term memory
who were the participants>
72 men and women
where were participants recruited from?
applied psychology research unit
who many conditions were there?
4
what were the four conditions?
4 words lists of 10 were used A acoustically similar words B acoustically dissimilar words C semantically similar words D semantically disimilar words
what were the two control groups?
B and D
what measure was used?
independant measures
how were words viewed?
they were projected via a projector at a rate of 1 word every 3 seconds
after presentation what were participants asked to do?
asked to do 6 tasks of memory of digits
then asked to recall the list of words
who many times was the initial recall and digit tasks repeated?
4 times
after four repetitions what happened?
a 15 minute interference task was added involving copying an 8 digit code at their own pace
surprise retest
when did surprise retest take place
after 15 minute interference test
why were words placed around the room?
it was not testing the remeberance of words but word order
what was found about acoustic encoding?
that participants initially found it hard to remember acoustically similar words but results of similar and disimilar words were not significant
acoustic encoding does not affect long term memory
what was found about semantic encoding?
particpaints found it harder to remember semantically similar words that dissimilar and recalled less at recall
long term memory encodes semantically
