Bacteriology Flashcards
Gram positive bacteria cell wall
Peptidoglycan complexed with techoic acids
Gram negative cell wall
Peptidoglycan complexed with phospholipid protein lipo-polysaccharide.
Peptidoglycan is made up of 2 amino sugars
- N- acetyl glucosamine
- N- acetyl muramic acid
Amino sugars are complexed with amino acids like
- L or D alanine
- D glutamic acid
- L lysine
- Diaminopimic acid
- Diaminobutyric acid
In some cases, amino acids like
Glycine or Aspartic acid maybe present
In the peptidoglycan, there’s extensive criss linking btwn amino acids
For example, in Staph. aureus
Glycine pentapeptide + lysine +terminal D alanine
Protoplasm
Kept intact in hypertonic solutions
Osmotic pressure
Less in gram negative than in gram positive.
Teichoic acid
Polymeric complexes of ribitol phosphate and glycerol phosphate with alanine with simple sugar or amino sugar
Cell membrane
Impermeable to small molecular wght subs. Like
Amino sugars and simple sugars
