Bacterial Recombination Flashcards
1
Q
Conjugation
A
Parasexual process that transfers DNA through pili; DNA is replicated as a single strand and made doubled stranded in recipient cell
2
Q
Transformation
A
Uptake of a DNA molecule; only possible by competent bacteria; one strand is broken down as it enters and the other strand can:
- Get broken down
- Circularize into a plasmid, if a full plasmid
- Pair with homologous region on chromosome and undergo single stranded recombination
3
Q
Transduction
A
Gene movement through viral vector
- Generalized: DNA is encapsulated into viral proteins
- Specialized: DNA is incorporated into viral genome
4
Q
An exact copy of a petri dish with colonies
A
Replica Plating
5
Q
F-Plasmid
A
Plasmid with genes for conjugation
F+ has at least one F-plasmid
F- lack F-plasmid
6
Q
Hfr Conjugation
A
Starts at oriT (opposite the direction of arrow head) and transfers chromosomal DNA and is recombined as double-stranded DNA
