Bacterial Growth Flashcards
What is agar derived from?
Seaweed
What is the term for: a population of organisms descended from a single cell and it is therefore separated from all other species?
Pure culture
Who developed solid media?
Koch
Who invented the dished that agar is kept in? And was is the name of the dish?
Kochs lab ass, Julius Richard Petri
Petri dish - duh.
Define binary fission:
After a bacterial cell has increased in size and double all of its parts it divides.
When are bacterial chromosomes replicated?
Early in cells life
What does a cell do to induce division?
Grows and elongates to about twice its size.
What happens to DNA during binary fission? (This is a weird question and answer…sorry)
DNA is partitioned, cell lays down new plasma membrane and cell wall materials in region between attachment site (septum) of two daughter genomes
What happens to the new plasma membrane in binary fission?
Eventually grows all the way around separating cell, lastly cell wall grows.
What is microbial growth defined as being?
An increase in the number of cells in a population
What is the generation time?
Time is takes for a population to double in number.
What is the growth curve?
In a closed system the population growth follows a pattern of stages, this is called the growth curve.
Define lag stage:
Cells “ramp up” by synthesizing macromolecules required for division, and ATP.
What is the term for the following? Cells dividing at a constant rate, growth is balanced with available nutrients
Exponential phase (log)
Define stationary phase:
Cells have exhausted supply of energy and nutrients, number of cells remains relatively constant
