Q

Characteristic differences between Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative bacteria?

A

GP: Stain purple, thick peptidoglycan cell wall (multi-layered), single plasma membrane interior to cell wall.

GN: Stain red / pink, thin peptidoglycan cell wall (single layer), outer & inner membranes that sandwich cell wall, presence of lipopolysaccharides on outer membrane.

Q

Staphylococcus Aureus classification?

A

GP Cocci and Coagulase-Positive

* S. epidermis, S. saprophyticus, S. hominis, S. hemolyticus, S. warneri are all Coagulase-Negative. The coagulase test is performed to differentiate S. aureus from the other Staph species!*
