Bacterial Adaptation Flashcards

1
Q

How do bacteria survive when there is a reduction in nutrient availability?

A
  • when nutrients are spare, gram positive bacteria can form resistance structures known as spores
  • this protects the cell from desiccation
  • can be very difficult to remove
  • it allows the bacterium to produce a dormant and highly resistant cell to preserve the cells genetic material in times of extreme stress
