Bacteria - structure Flashcards
are bacteria visible with a microscope?
yes
what are the 4 shapes which bacteria can be differentiated by?
- coccus (round)
- Bacillus (rod - shaped)
- Spirillum (spiral - shaped)
- Vibro (comma - shaped)
if bacteria doesnt have a nucleus where is the DNA confined?
nucleoid
List the 7 components a bacteria is made up of with the aid of the picture below:
- cytoplasm
- chromatin material aka DNA
- cell wall
- ribosomes
- cillium/flagellum
- slime capsule
- cell membrane
What does the cytoplasm do?
dense matter that holds the components inside a cell together
What does the chromatin material aka DNA
do?
it’s a concentration of chromatin material in the nucleoid area
What does the cell wall do?
protects organelle
What does the ribosomes do?
involved in protein synthesis
What does the cillium/flagellum
do?
whip like cellular outgrowth that helps the bacteria move (not found in all bateria)
What does the slime capsule
do?
protects bacterial from any harmful chemicals in hosts body fluid (absent in some bacteria)
What does the cell membrane do?
protects bacteria
