What is TB?
Disease caused by the Myobacterium tubercolosis where bacteria will attack and destroy lung tissue
How can one get infected by TB ?
It is spread airborne when someone coughs or sneezes, when it enters the lungs it’ll multiply and mat move to blood stream to kidneys and central nervous system (brain and spinal chord)
What are TB symptoms? (7)
- fever
- sweating at night
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- chest pains
- cough that last for 2weeks +
- coughing up blood stained phlem (sputum)
What tests can be done to confirm TB?
X - ray of lungs
TB skin test
Tissue culture
Explain X-ray of lungs:
Person will have visible patches of destroyed lung tissue
Explain TB skin test
Chemical tuberculin is injected under skin in lower arm. If theres a positive reaction where a limp or rash appears in injected area, the person has been exposed to TB but it is unactive
Explain Tissue culture
Phlegm sample is observed at a lab under sterile conditions the growth is then observed under microscope for TB presence
How can one treat TB?
- a course of antibiotics must be taken daily for the full course duration. Usually 6 months
- if not fulfilled bacteria can become resistant and harder to kill
How can one prevent TB ?
- newborn babies must take BCG vaccines
- TB patients must not come close to people with weak immune systems
- health care workers must be screened regularly for TB and be treated asap if tested positive
- immune system must be strengthened with healthy diet and exercise regularly
