Bacteria basics-Table 1 Flashcards
what are the 4 gram positive bacterial classes that are important to know?
Streptococci-Group A Strep, viridans strep / Streptococcus Pneumoniae / Enterococcus(faecalis) / Staphylococci (aureus, coag neg)
What are the atypical bacterial classes to know?
mycoplasma, chlamydia, legionella, Haemophilus influenzae,
What are the gram negative rods to know?
E.coli, klebsiella, proteus,
What is a gram negative that is associated with recurrent infections?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
What are the Anaerobe classes to know?
Bacteroides, Clostridia, Prevotella
What are Enterobacteriacea?
Gram negative rods, aerobic
What species make up the enterobacteriacea?
interobacter, escherichia coli, klebsiella pneumoniae, morganella morganii, proteus vulgaris, providencia, serratia marcenena, salmonella, shigella, yersinia
What are SPACE organisms and why are they important?
Serratia, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Citrobacter Enterobacter; they require double coverave d/t more resistance; they are strictly pathogenic-aka.not normal colinizers of human microbiota
Encapsulated bacteria: Some Killers Have Pretty Nice Capsules
S Streptococcus pneumoniae K Klebsiella pneumoniae H Haemophilus influenzae P Pseudomonas aeruginosa N Neisseria meningitidis C Cryptococcus neoformans
Remeber… All bacilli are gram negative except “L.DATTA”
L- Listeria D - Diphtheria A - Actinomycetes T - Tetani Clostridium T - TB Mycobatcterium A - Anthrax bacillus
Staphylococcus aureus: diseases caused
SOFT PAINS:
Skin infections Osteomyelitis Food poisoning Toxic shock syndrome Pneumonia Acute endocarditis Infective arthritis Necrotizing fasciitis Sepsis
Food poisoning: bugs inducing
“Eating Contaminated Stuff Causes Very Big Smelly Vomit”:
E. coli O157-H7 [undercooked meat, esp. hamburgers] Clostridium botulinum [canned foods] Salmonella [poultry, meat, eggs] Vibrio parahaemolyticus [seafood] Bacillus cereus [reheated rice] Staphylococcus aureus [meats, mayo, custard] Clostridium perfringens [reheated meat] Vibrio vulnificus [seafood]
Group A Strep is
Strep. Pyogenes
Streptococcus pyogenes: diseases caused NIPPLES:
Necrotising fasciitis and myositis Impetigo Pharyngitis Pneumonia Lymphangitis Erysipelas and cellulitis Scarlet fever/ Streptococcal TSS
What makes bacteroides fragilis so virulent?
Anaerobe, makes succinic acid= resistance to phagocytosis, Lipid A causes little immune response so goes unnoticed, found in GU/GI, resistant to betas, aminoglycosides and quinolones.
