Bacteria and viruses Flashcards
What are the three domains of life?
Bacteria, Archaea and Eukaryota
How is life classified?
By sequences of DNA
What are the shapes of bacteria referred to?
morphologies
What are the different morphologies?
Coccus, rod, spirillum, spirochetes, appendaged, filamentous
What bacteria produces half the oxygen in the atmosphere?
cyanobacteria
Are bacteria considered to be unicellular
yes
What affects if bacteria can be Gram positive or Gram negative?
The structure of the cell wall
What are the traits of Gram negative bacteria?
It is much harder to treat with antibiotics, it retains stain, cytoplasmic and outer membrane, LPS- endotoxin, thin layer of peptidoglycan.
What are the traits of Gram positive bacteria?
It doesn’t retain a stain, cytoplasmic membrane (single membrane), thick layer of peptidoglycan, teichoic acid.
Describe bacteria
Small and unicellular
ubiquitous
diverse
persistent
What are viruses?
Are small infectious agents of different hosts. They are parasites of humans, animals, plants, bacteria.
What genomes can viruses have ?
Either DNA or RNA
