Bacteria and Virus Flashcards
Prokaryote
single celled organism that does not have a nucleus or organelles
Bacilli
a rod shaped disease causing bacterium. gram positive bacteria
Cocci
A sphere shaped bacteria
Spirilla
bacteria with a rigid spiral structure found in stagnant water, sometimes causes disease
Binary Fission
asexual reproduction in which an organism duplicates its DNA, divides into two parts with each new organism receiving one copy of DNA
Endospore
A differentiated cell formed within cells of some gram positive bacteria that are extremely resistant to heat and other harmful conditions and agents
Nitrogen fixation
the process by which atmospheric nitrogen is converted by either a natural or industrial means to a form of nitrogen such as ammonia
Bioremediation
a process that uses microorganisms or their enzymes to treat polluted sites for regaining their original condition
Antibiotic
Any substance that inhibits the growth and replication of a bacteria
Pathogenic bacteria
bacteria that can cause disease
Virus
a submicroscopic infectious agent replicates only inside the living cells of an organism
host
a larger organism that harbours a smaller organism that provides nourishment and shelter.
