Bacteria Flashcards
What characteristics do all prokaryotes have in common?
- single celled
- single circular chromosome
- no nucleus
- no membrane
What are the three basic bacteria shapes?
Bacilli (rod shaped)
Cocci (sphere shaped)
Spirilla (spiral shaped)
What is the known group of prokaryotes and where can they be found?
Bacteria; almost everywhere
Name the two kingdoms for prokaryotes.
Kingdom Eubacteria
Kingdom Archaebacteria
Where are Archaebacteria found?
Extreme environments
Ex. Hot sulfur springs and thermal vents in the ocean floor
What are thought to be the oldest organisms on Earth?
Archaebacteria
What does heterotrophic mean?
It means the bacteria doesn’t make its own food.
Are all bacteria heterotrophic? Explain.
Most are, but some make their own food using chrolophyll.
What are three ways some bacteria help humans?
Make food
Break down harmful substances
Help digest food
What are the parts of bacteria?
Cell wall Cell membrane Pili (little hairs) Flagella (tail) Cytoplasm Ribosomes
