Bacteria Flashcards
bacteria
single celled micro-organisms with plant or animal characteristics.
types of bacteria
nonpathogenic and pathogenic
nonpathogenic
- most common
- does not cause harm
- does not cause disease
- may be useful (help with digestion, make yogurt, cheese)
pathogenic
harmful, disease producing
classifications of pathogenic bacteria
- cocci (round shape, there are 3 sub categories)
- bacilli (rod shape)
- spirilla (spiral shape)
staphylococci
-formed in clusters (like a bunch of grapes)
-most common
-pus forming
-resident flora of the skin
responsible for acne, boils, abscess, MRSA
streptococci
-formed in chains (like a pearl necklace)
-pus forming
-resident flora of the mouth, upper respiratory tract
responsible for strep throat, blood poisoning, folliculitis
diplococci
-formed in pairs
-resident flora of the skin
responsible for bacterial pneumonia, gonorrhea,chlamydia
bacilli
-rod shape
-most common
-spore forming
-cilia or flagella to aid in movement
responsible for tetanus, tuberculosis, ecoli food poisoning, anthrax
spirilla
-spiral or corkscrew shape
-resistant to anibiotics
responsible for syphillis, lyme’s disease
cell processes
cilia and flagella (how some bacteria move around)
cilia
hair-like extensions, creates a rowing motion
flagella
tail-like extension, creates a snake-like motion
binary fission
- active stage of growth and reproduction
- daughter cells are produced every 20-60 mins.
- favorable conditions- ex. warm, dark, damp and dirty
spore forming stage
- inactive or resting stage of growth and reproduction
- forms a spore around itself
- resistant to temperature (heat or cold), and disinfectants
