18
Q

What organism is associated with gas gangrene?

A

C perfringens

toxin release creates gas

19
Q

N gonorrhoeae Gram

A

GNDC

20
Q

Coryebacterium diptheriae Gram and appearance on Hoyles plate?

A

small GPB in palisades

black colonies

21
Q

When do we add a CHOC plate to throat swabs?

A

clinical details: epiglottitis
target org = HINF

22
Q

Causative organisms of vincent’s angina/trench mouth?

Presents with pharyngeal and gum ulceration

A

Fusobacterium necrophorum and Borrelia vincentii

23
Q

F necrophorum Gram and appearance on agar

A

Gram: GNB, sometimes in chains

B-haem colonies, MTZ S, pointy colonies, yellow-ish colour

24
Q

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum Gram and appearance on agar

A

small GPB, sometimes branching

B-haem strep - non-grouping

25
Q

What rash is caused by Mycobacterium marinum?

A

Fishtank granuloma

26
Q

Mycobacterium sp gram appearance?

Other microscopy techniques to identify Mycobacterium?

A

Gram variable beaded branching rods - poorly stained

Auramine staining - Mycobact’ fluoresce yellow-green

Zeihls-Neelson stain - pink/purple can see the morphology more clearly

27
Q

Treponema pallidum morphology and causes which disease?

A

Cannot be seen in Gram

Can be seen on dark field -tightly wound spirochaete

Syphilis

28
Q

Ureaplasma urealyticum causes what?

How can it be detected?

A

genital tract infections in men and women

PCR

29
Q

Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum are detected using PCR, why?

A

Both are difficult to grow and identify on agar. They do not have cell walls.

Ureaplasma sp are extremely small.

30
Q

What can L monocytogenes cause in pregnancy?

A

maternal septicaemia, morbidity/mortality of fetus
