Agar Flashcards
learn what organisms look like and what the agar content is
MSA contents
Mannitol Salt Agar
~mannitol fermented by SAUR - yellow
~ salt used bc SAUR halophilic
MSA target organism
SAUR - yellow cols
CCDA contents and incubation settings
Charcoal cefoperazone deoxycholate, no blood
microaerophilic conditions, 41C
CCDA target organism
Campylobacter
metallic grey/green appearance
C coli and C jejuni isolated better at 41C
CLED contents
Cysteine- supports some colis
Lactose - differentiate LFs
Electrolyte deficient - reduce proteus swarms
indicator is bromomethyl blue
XLD contents
Xylose - shigella = non-fermentor
Lysine - Salmonella ferment xylose quick and move onto lysine
Deoxycholate - reduce Gram pos orgs
Sodium thiosulphate and ferric = H2S production
XLD - appearance of shigella
clear colonies
no Xylose fermentation so NO YELLOW
XLD - appearance of Salmonella
NO YELLOW - ferments xylose and lysine which reverts pH
usually black centres due to H2S production
GVPC contents + incubation conditions
Glycine
Vancomycin
Polymixin
Cyclohexamide
Charcoal to neutralise toxins
10 day incubation, moist env
GVPC target organism
Legionella
ground glass grey colonies
BCEP contents
peptones and sugars to support Burk’s
crystal violet, polymixin B, gentamicin, ticarcillin - SELECTIVE agents
BCEP target organism
Burkholderia species
Pink colour
CAP contents
Colistin - reduce GNB
Aztreonam - reduce proteus
PCFC contents
Pseudomonas selective agar with
Cetrimide
Fusidic Acid
Cefaloridine
PCFC target organism
Pseudomonas - green
