Q

Why did Britain tax the colonies and what was their response

A

Britain was deeply in debt from the French and Indian War.

Also, defending the colonies was added to that debt.

Colonies’ response: Nine colonies sent representatives to Stamp Act Congress. They asked Parliament to REPEAL the stamp Act. Sons of Liberty in Boston encouraged colonists to defy the Stamp Act. In 1766, Britain repealed the Stamp Act

A

A new set of taxes on products colonies imported from England. (DUTY)

Taxes were placed on paint, paper, glass, lead and tea.

The Women calling themselves the Daughters of Liberty started a BOYCOTT of British goods. Daughters of Liberty wove their own cloth and made tea from their own herbs.

They asked Parliament to REPEAL the Townshend Acts. They repealed the duties on everything EXCEPT TEA.
