When did Isabella and Ferdinand marry?
19th October 1469
What did their marriage contract stipulate?
Ferdinand was to : respect the customs of Castile; all appointments and decisions were to be made in accordance with Isabella’s wishes; live in Castile and support the policy of reclaiming land from the moors; all decisions had to bear the signature of both partners.
When did Ferdinand become King of Sicily?
1468.
When did King Henry IV of Castile die?

What was going on in Catalonia?
They had been revolting against Ferdinand’s father, John II, since 1462. Continued on until 1472.
Legitimacy of Joanna?
Henry was believed to be incompetent (his previous wife, Blanche, had been declared a virgin and then locked up in Navarre until her death). Many believed that his daughter Joanna actually belonged to Beltrán de La Cueva and hence was not a legitimate heir, whereas his half-sister, Isabella, was.
Run up to War of Succession?
Afonso had been acting as King, following the wishes of nobles who opposed Henry and had even conducted a deposition-in-effigy. When Afonso died in 1468 he said Isabella should be queen. Henry had agreed to name her heir but she needed consent from him to marry. By marrying Ferdinand she breached the terms of this agreement and Joanna was named heir again. Upon Henry’s death, however, Isabella declared herself Queen.
Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando?
18th September 1468. Henry agreed to name Isabella his heir however she had to have his consent before marrying (though he could not force her to marry).
Who did Joanna marry and when?
Afonso V of Portugal in 1475.
How did Isabella gain support in the War of Succession?
New grants of land; grants of titles and royal offices; reaffirmation of the grandees right to collect financial grants awarded by the crown since 1464.
When was the battle of Toro? What was the outcome?
1st March 1476. The Portuguese were defeated and this more or less secured the crown of Castile for Isabella.
Treaty of Alcacovas?
4th September 1479. Portugal renounced claims to Castile and recognised Spanish possession of the Canaries. In return Castile acknowledged Portuguese possession of Azores (in the Atlantic Ocean west of Portugal), the Cape Verde Islands (off West Africa), and Madeira.
