Back Neurology Flashcards
Length of Spinal Cord
2/3 of the vertebral column from the medulla oblongata to the conus medullaris.
Layers of Meninges
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia mater
Epidural space
Outside of dura. Occupied by internal vertebral venoud plexus and epidural fat.
Spinal dural sac
Tube-shaped sheath surrounding the spinal cord and lining the vertebral canal.
Dural root sheath
Extension of the dura mater that surrounds the anterior and posterior roots.
Subarachnoid space
Space between pia mater and arachnoid mater and filled with CSF.
Arachnoid trabeculae
Strands of CT that span the subarachnoid space and join arachnoid mater to the pia mater.
Lumbar cistern
Enlargement of the subarachnoid space beneath te conus medullaris.
Denticulate ligament
Lateral extension of the pia mater. Suspends the spinal cord in the dural sac.
Cervical enlargement
Swelling of SC from C4-T1 that corresponds with the brachial plexus and the upper extremity.
Lumbosacral enlargement
Swelling of SC from T11-S1 that correspond to lumbar and sacral plexi and lower extremity.
Spinal nerves
Sensory and motor.
8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccygeal.
Anterior rami of the cervical spine contains:
3
Cervical plexus.
Brachial plexus.
Recurrent meningeal branches.
Posterior rami of the cervical spine contains:
4
Suboccipital N.
Great Occipital N.
Least Occipital N.
C4-8 medial and lateral branches.
–> medial: muscular, articular and cutaneous branches.
–> lateral:muscular and cutaneous branches.
Anterior rami of the thoracic spine contains:
4
Atypical Intercostal N.
Typical Intercostal N.
Subcostal N.
Recurrent meningeal branches.
