Back Arthrology Flashcards
Synovial joint types (5)
Planar Ginglymus (Hinge) Trochoid (Pivot) Condyloid Sellar (Saddle) Speroidal (Ball and socket)
Planar joint
Allows sliding movement.
ex: acromioclavicular joint
Ginglymus (Hinge)
Allows flexion and extension only.
ex: elbow joint
Trochoid (Pivot)
Allows for pivoting.
ex: atlantoaxial joint, proximal radioulnar joint.
Condyloid joint
Biaxial. Allows for flexion/extension and abduction/adduction.
ex: metacarpophalangeal joint
Sellar (Saddle) joint
Biaxial. Allows for flexion/extension and abduction and adduction, but is capable of false curcumduction without rotation.
ex: carpometacarpal joint
Spheroidal (Ball and Socket) joint
Multiaxial. Fits like ball and socket.
ex: hip joint
Fibrous joint types (4)
Suture joint
Gomphosis
Schindylesis
Syndesmosis
Suture joint
Joining of two skull bones.
Gomphosis
Peg-in-socket.
ex: teeth
Syndesmosis
Two bones separates by filamentous cartilage.
ex: radius and ulna
Cartilaginous joint types (2)
Synchondrosis
Symphysis
Synchondrosis
Usually transient (while bone is growing, then bone fuses and joint is gone). Few exceptions.
Sympysis
Bone-cartilage-bone.
Vertebral body-disk-vertebral body.
Compound joint
More than one joint.
