How do you start the back exam?
A
- general inspection of back
- gait

What do you do after general inspection?
A
-palpate spinous process, paraspinal, SI and ASIS

What do you do after palpation?
A
- Schrober’s test
- movements such as flexion, extension, lateral flexion, rotation

What do you do after movement?
A
- straight leg test
- press on ASIS and apply lateral pressure to separate them

What do you ask for?
A
- assess joint above and below (cervical and hip)
- full lower limb neuro exam

What are symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis?
A
- inflammatory, not improved by rest, improved by exercise
- back pain >3 months
- limited lumbar movements
- curvature changes
