Q

what is my thesis

A

In this essay, drawing on the principles of New Historicism, I will argue that the creation of vigilantes and the depiction of vigilantism in early crime fiction from the Victorian era up until 1950 examine the consequences of individuals taking justice into their own hands, ultimately questioning the effectiveness of the legal system and the role of government in maintaining social order.

Q

What is new historicim

A

The theoretical approach of New Historicism was founded in a school of literary criticism, primarily developed by Stephen Greenblatt. This theory originated in the 1980s and examines the close relationship between history, society, and literature. New Historicism argues that literature cannot be read in isolation. By comparing literature with other texts, not just literary ones, and other art forms such as music or film, literature can be revised and read as cultural poetry or studies, though under a limited scope (Skei 2006, 169-170). New historicism draws on earlier literary theories like Marxism’s views on power structures and with the historical-biographical focus on contexts such as religion, politics, economy, justice, and family structures that are carriers of ideologies and how these power structures influence the literature being written and how the writers of that literature influence the society in turn.
