B9: Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration used for
Movement
To keep warm
Chemical reactions to build larger molecules
Aerobic respiration equation
Glucose + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 - 6CO2 + 6H2O
What happens if oxygen is not present and what is the equation for this
The body anaerobically respires
Glucose - lactic acid
What is there not as much energy being transferred from anaerobic respiration than aerobic respiration
This is because the oxidation of glucose is incomplete
What’s the anaerobic equation for plants and yeast cells
Glucose - ethanal + carbon dioxide
However in yeast cells anaerobic respiration is called fermentation
What is metabolism
This is the sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell or body
What’s the uses of glue ode in the plant cell
It’s used to strengthen the cell wall with cellulose
Glucose forms starch which stores glucose
Glucose reacts with nitrate ions to create amino acids to synthesise proteins
What is glucose such as in the body
Glucose can be stored in the body as glycogen which is a storage form of glucose
How are lipids formed and where are they found
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids form lipids which lipids are found in the cell membrane
