B8 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the main equation in photosynthesis?
6CO2+6H20 = 6O2 + C6H12O6
What is required for photosynthesis?
Light energy, Chlorophyll
What are simple sugars used to create?
Sugars, starches, proteins, fats/oils, cellulose
How has the waxy cuticle evolved to become more efficient?
It reduces the amount of water that escapes
How have palisade cells evolved to be most efficient?
They are tightly packed with chloroplasts and are placed vertically to allow for more to access the light energy
How has the spongy mesophyll layer evolved?
Cells are less tightly packed to allow for more surface area for diffusion
What is the independent variable for the required practical?
Light intensity (thing you change)
What is the dependent variable for the required practical?
Amount of oxygen released
What chemical is used for the plant to be in?
Sodium hydrocarbonate because it promotes photosynthesis
How do you work out the rate of photosynthesis?
Amount of gas / time
What is the light intensity proportional to?
1/d^2
How does temperature affect photosynthesis?
It increases the rate in a linear fashion but when it gets too hot, the enzymes are denatured, which means the rate will start to decline
How does CO2 concentration affect the rate of photosynthesis?
As there is more co2 the rate increases. However it then reaches a constant as other factors cap the rate at which the plant can photosynthesise.
What is another limiting factor on photosynthesis?
Low levels of chloroplasts
Hat are 3 uses for glucose in plants?
Respiration, Converted to starch and stored, converted into complex carbohydrates such as cellulose to strengthen the cell wall
Why are plants carnivorous?
To adapt to nitrate low soil as insects can provide the minerals required to survive
Why were greenhouses built?
To control factors like co2 concentration an light intensity
What benefits does a greenhouse have?
Increase growth and crop yield. You can also grow crops all year round
What is hydroponics?
It is growing plants in water rather than soil which allows for the perfect amount of nutrients to be supplied to the plant
What is the negatives of hydroponics?
It is very expensive to start and needs detailed maintenance
