B7 - Ecology Flashcards
What does decomposition produce
Compost
What is compost and what is it used for
Compost is decomposed organic matter that is used as a natural fertilizer for crops and plants
What is responsible for decomposition
Microwave organisms such as bacteria and fungi , as well as detritus feeders
What are the four factors affecting the rate of decay
Temperature water availability oxygen availability and the number of decay organisms
How does temperature affect the rate of decay
Warmer temperatures make things.Do decompose quicker because they increase the rate at which the enzymes involved in decomposition worker. If it is too hot, the decomposition stop stops because the enzymes become d natured. And the organism’s die really cold temperatures also slow down the rate of decomposition
How does water availability affect the rate of decay
Decay takes place faster in moist environment because the organisms involved in decay need Water to carry out biological processes
How does oxygen availability Effect the rate of decay
Many organisms need oxygen to respire which they need to do to Survive microorganisms involved in anaerobic decay dont need oxygen
How does the number of decay organisms affect the rate of decay
The more microorganisms and detritus feeders there are the faster decomposition happens
