B4 Bioenergetics Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
when a plant takes in water through the roots of a plant to create glucose for energy and releases oxygen as waste
what is the word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water —> glucose +oxygen
what is the symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
more transpiration = ?
more photosynthesis
what are the 5 main ways that plants use glucose
1) for respiration
2) making cellulose
3) making amino acids
4) stores as oils or fats
5) stored as starch
limiting factors for photosynthesis
1) light
2) temperature
3) cholorophyll
what is the method for the practical that measure the rate of photosynthesis
1) place a source of light at a specific distance from the pondweed
2) leave the pondweed to photosynthesise for a set amount of time. as it photosynthesises the oxygen released will collect in the capillary tube
3) use a syringe to draw the gas bubble in the tube up alongside a ruler and the length of the gas bubble is measured this is proportional to the volume of oxygen provided
4) repeat the experiment with the light source at the same distance and find the mean
5) then repeat the whole experiment with the light source at different distances from the pondweed
what does the graph for the rate of photosynthesis and light intensity show
As the light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases
the rate of photosynthesis stops increasing or stays constant. It is being limited by the chlorophyll concentration, carbon dioxide or temperature
What does the graph for the rate of photosynthesis and carbon dioxide concentration show
As the carbon dioxide concentration increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases
the rate of photosynthesis stops increasing or stays constant. It is being limited by the chlorophyll concentration, light intensity or temperature
What does the graph for the rate of photosynthesis and temperature show
As the temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases
the rate of photosynthesis stops increasing or stays constant. It is being limited by the chlorophyll concentration, light intensity or carbon dioxide concentration
What is respiration
a chemical process where energy is released from glucose
what is areobic respiration
areobic respiration is when glucose reacts with oxygen from the air in the mitochondria
what the word equation for areobic respiration
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water (+energy)
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration
glucose —> lactic acid (+energy)
what is anaerobic respiration
a type of respiration that releases energy from glucose but does not use oxygen
