B6-plants Structures And Functions Flashcards
For health growth what do plants need?
Light, water They also need Carbon dioxide-for photosynthesis Oxygen-for cell respiration Minerals
What are the three main parts of a plant
Leaves-are entry and exit points for the gases needed by plants
Stems-connect the root to the leaves ,flowers and fruits
Roots -absorb watsr and minerals from the soil
Why is root hair cells adapted at absorbing water and minerals from the soil?
Root hair cells are long and thin. This provided a larger surface area which speeds up the rate of osmosis (absorption) of water and active transport of mineral ions
What is osmosis
Osmosi is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to a low water concentration
Osmosis in a root hair cell
Water enters the root by osmosis through the root hair cell.root hairs increase the surface area which increase the rate osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permable membrane from an area of high water concentration to low water concentrations
This does not require energy
Water then moves from the cell to cell into the xylem by osmosis because the next cell in the sequence has a lower water concentration
What the word equation for photosynthesis
Water +carbon dioxide—->oxygen +glucose
On top of the arrow is light
What is the balanced equation for photosynthesis
6H2O+6cO2——->6o2+C6H12O6
Only the 6 is big
What reaction is photosynthesis?
An endothermic reaction takes in energy
Chlorphyll
Water carbon dioxide
Sunlight
What does the xylem carry and what direction does it go in (transpiration)
Water+mineral ions
In a upwards direction
From the roots to the leaves where the water can be used for photosynthesis
What does the phloem carrry and what direction(translocation)
Carries ions and food
In both direction
From the leaves when food can be made from photosynthesis to the roots where it can be stored
What are the factors that affct transpiration
Light-bright light-more transpiration
More light means more photosynthesis whick means more water brought up into the cell
Temperature-high temperature-more transpiration because the rate of reactions going to happen faster
High wind more transpiration because wind is going to be brushing againsy the leaf ,or flowing against the leaf moving things out of the way so diffusion is going to play a part here
High humidity-lower transpiration
