Q

What is TMV (tobbaco mosaic virus) ?
- How is it treated
- What are the symptoms
- How does it spread

A

It is spread when aphids damage plants and act as disease vectors, carrying pathogens from plant to plant
Symptoms are discoloured leaves, curled leaves and stunted growth
It can be controlled through the removal of weeds and infected plants

Q

What are the issue with leaky heart valves ?

A
  • Valves prevent backflow
  • Can beome leaky due to old age, infection or damage from heart attakcs
  • Oxygenated and deoxygnated blood mixes - causes tiredness, lack of energy and breathlessness

12
Q

What coronary arteries and what happens if they get blocked ?

A
  • They are the blood vessels that surround the heart and give the heart blood
  • If they get blocked no oxygen can get to the muscle so it dies and causes a heart attack
13
Q

What is the process of a stent ?

A
  1. The crimped stent with ballon placed at the site
  2. Inflate the ballon
  3. Stent in position (remove ballon )
14
Q

What happens in a heart bypass ?

A

Get a new vein from the body and put it onto the heart to bypass the blockage

14
Q

What are antivirals ?

A

Drugs that destroy viruses, normally by preventing them from replicating

15
Q

What are antiobiotics ?

A

Drugs that kill bacteria without damaging the indviduals cell

16
Q

What are antiseptics ?

A

A subsatnce that stops or slows down the growth of microorgansisims

17
Q

What are disinfectants ?

A

They kill microbes - applied to non-living surfaces

18
Q

What is the zone of inhabition ?

A

The area arounf the sample where the growth of bacteria is prevented

18
Q

What is the process of creating a new drug ?

A
  1. Chemicals that may work are found
  2. Pre clinical trials on a rodent & non-rodents
  3. Phase 1 of clinical trials - 20-80 healthy mal volunteers for saftey and dosage
  4. Phase 2 (double blind trial) 100-300 volunteers that have the disease - look for efficacy and side effects
  5. Phase 3- 1000-5000 volunteers to montior adverse reactions to long term use
  6. MHRA review approval
19
Q

What is meant by a double blind trial ?

A
  • Patients are randomly allocated into a group
  • Some patients will take the new drug and some will take a placebo drug (doesn’t contain the drug)
  • Doctors and paitents do not know which group they are in to remove any bias
20
Q

What is stem cell therapy ?

A
  • Using stem cells to replenish ones that are damaged or injured
21
Q

What is gene therapy ?

A

Altering or adding the alleles to the genome to stop someone from developing a disease

22
Q

What is the process of selective breeding ?

A
  1. Breeder selects the animal with the desired characteristic
  2. Offspring are produced
  3. Some offspring will have the desired characteristic
  4. Animals with the characteritsics will continue to be bred
23
Q

What is genetic engineering ?

A

The process of making chnages in the DNA code of an organisim to produce an orgaisim with desired characteristics

24
Q

What are the benefits of genetic engineering ?

A
  • More food
  • Increased food security
  • Increased nutrition
  • Get new medicines
25
Q

What are the negatives of genetic engineering ?

A
  • Don’t know the long term impact
  • Un-ethical
  • Could affect foodchains/ecosystems
26
Q

What is the process of making bacteria produce insulin ?

A
  • Cut out plasmid and insulin gene
  • Use restriction enzymes to cut the DNA
  • Glue the pieces together with DNA ligase
-Put the engineered plasmid in bacteria
-This bacteria will noe produce human insulin
27
Q

What is the impact of deforestation ?

A
  • Reduces the amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere
  • Reduces plant and animal biodiversity
  • Reduces chances of discovering new medicines
