B5 The eye Flashcards
What is the function of the cornea?
Refracts light- bends as it enters the eye
What is the function of the iris?
Controls how much light enters the pupil
What is the function of the lens?
Further refracts light to focus it on the retina
What is the function of the retina?
Contains the light receptors
What is the function of the optic nerve?
Carries impulses between the eye and the brain
What is the function of the sclera?
Tough white outer layer of the eye. It helps protect the eye from injury
What are the 2 main light receptors in the retina?
Rods and cones
Which light receptor is more sensitive to the light therefore making it more useful in dim light?
rods
What does the reflex action control?
The amount of light entering the eye
What is the reflex action?
Automatic and rapid response to a stimulus
To focus on a near object does the lens become thicker or thinner?
Thicker this allows the light rays to refract more strongly
To focus on a far object does the lens become thicker or thinner?
thinner this allows the light rays to refract slightly
