B2 Flashcards
Lipases
Break down fat into glycerol and fatty acids. Made in the pancreas and the small intestine
Definition of cell
the smallest unit of an organism
Definition of tissue
a group of cells with a similar structure and function, working to complete a job
Definition of organ
a group of tissues working to complete a job
Definition of an organ system
group of organs that work together to complete a job
Definition of organism
an individual plant, animal or single celled organism
Definition of enzyme
Biological catalysts which increase the rate of reaction without being used up themselves
What do enzymes do?
lower the activation energy, so more reactions are successful
What are enzymes made out of?
large proteins made up of chains of amino acids
What are enzymes affected by?
Temperature
pH
surface area
concentration
Carbohydrases
Breaks down starch into simple sugars. Made in the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine
Protease
Break down proteins into amino acids. Made in the stomach, pancreas and small intestine
Bile
Not an enzyme but it neutralises the stomach acid, allowing enzymes in the small intestine to work. It emulsifies fat, breaking them down into tiny droplets Produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder before being released into the small intestine
