B5 - Nervous System / Reflexes Flashcards
What is a stimuli
Changes in the environment
What are the different parts of the Nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Sensory Neurones
Motor Neurons
Effectors
What is the CNS
Central Nervous System (only in vertebrates)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord, connected to the body by sensory neurones and motor neurons in mammals
What are Sensory Neurons
The neurones that carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS
What are Motor Neurons
The neurons that carry electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors
What are effectors
All the muscles and glands that respond to the nervous impulses
What are receptors
The cells that detect stimuli
What is the retina covered in?
Light receptor cells
What is the connection between 2 neurones called
Synapse
How are nerve signals transferred through a synapse
Chemicals diffusing across the gap
Vasodilation
When you’re too hot, blood vessels supplying skin dilate so more blood flows to the skin
Vasoconstriction
When you’re too cold, blood vessels supplying skin cpmstrict to close of the skin’s blood supply
