B5 Flashcards
Pathogens
Pathogen in the oldest and broadest sense is anything that can produce disease
Viruses
A virus is a biological agent that reproduces inside the cells of living hosts. When infected by a virus, a host cell is forced to produce thousands of identical copies of the original virus at an extraordinary rate
Communicable disease
Some ways in which communicable diseases spread are by: physical contact with an infected person, such as through touch sexual intercourse
Vaccines
A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular disease. A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins, or one of its surface proteins.
Sexually transmitted diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact.
Immune system
The immune system is a host defense system comprising many biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease
HIV
is a virus that damages the cells in your immune system and weakens your ability to fight everyday infections and disease.
Immune reactions
Type I hypersensitivity is an immediate or anaphylactic reaction, often associated with allergy.
Mental health
a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being
Obesity
the state of being grossly fat or overweight.
Diseases
disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.
Bacteria
Bacteria constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms. Typically a few micrometres in length, bacteria have a number of shapes, ranging from spheres to rods and spirals.
Viruses
A virus is a biological agent that reproduces inside the cells of living hosts. When infected by a virus, a host cell is forced to produce thousands of identical copies of the original virus at an extraordinary rate
Skin
Skin is the soft outer tissue covering vertebrates. Other animal coverings, such as the arthropod exoskeleton, have different developmental origin, structure and chemical composition.
