B4 Organising animals and plants Flashcards
Blood is a unique tissue based on a liquid called…..
plasma
Plasma carries what blood components
Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets
How much blood does the average person carry?
4.7 - 5.0 litres of blood
What is blood plasma
A yellow liquid that transports all of your blood cells and some other substances around your body
What does blood plasma transport?
Waste carbon dioxide
urea
amino acids
glycerol
fatty acids
etc.
What percent of blood is plasma
55%
What percent of blood is red blood cells
45%
What percent of blood is white blood cells and platelets
<1%
What do red blood cells do?
Pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to the cells where it is needed.
How are red blood cells adapted?
Biconcave discs - increased surface area
Haemoglobin - binds to oxygen
No nucleus - more space for haemoglobin
What is the difference in size between white blood cells and red blood cells
White blood cells are much bigger
How many red blood cells are there compared to whit blood cells?
much more
What are the 2 types of white blood cells
Lymphocytes & phagocytes
What do lymphocytes do
Form antibodies against microorganisms. Some form antitoxins against poisons made by microorganisms
What do phagocytes do
engulf and digest invading bacteria and viruses
What are platelets?
Small fragments of cells
Do platelets have a nucleus
no
What do platelets do?
help to form clot blots at site of wound
What is blood clotting
A series of enzyme-controlled reactions that results in converting fibrinogen into fibrin
How does blood clotting occur?
The enzyme-controlled reaction produces a network of protein fibres that capture lots of red blood cells and more platelets to form a jelly-like clot that stops you bleeding to death
