B.4 Ecosystems Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem makes up all the living organisms and physical conditions in an area
What are the organisms which live in the ecosystem called?
Community
What is the habitat?
The area they live in
What is the population?
Total amount of organisms in the species
What are the three things you can divide the community into?
Decomposes
Consumers
Producers
What is a decomposer?
A special type of consumers which gain their energy by feeding on dead material
What is a consumer?
Cannot make their own food, have to eat other organisms ( All animals)
What is a producer?
An organism which can make their own food by photosynthesis (all plants)
What does biotic mean?
Living organisms
What is abiotic?
Non living
What abiotic factors affect the community of a species?
Light intensity
Temperature
Moisture
pH soil level
What are the three main types of relationships between organisms?
Predation
Mutualism
Parasitism
What is Predation?
Relationship between a predator and prey
What is mutualism?
When both organisms benefit from the relationship
What is parasitism?
A relationship where just th parasite gains from the relationship, the host suffers
What is interdependence?
When one organism relies on another
What are the 5 different carbon stores for the carbon cycle?
Air
Plants
Animals
Fossil fuels
Soil
How do plants take in and give out carbon in the carbon cycle?
IN - photosynthesis
OUT - respiration and animals eating the plant
How do animals give out carbon in the carbon cycle? 2
Respiration and once they die they slowly decay because of the micro-organisms in the soil which causes carbon to be released due to microbial respiration
