B4 - biogenetics Flashcards
what type of reaction is photosynthesis
endothermic as it absorbs energy from it surroundings
what is photosynthesis
an endothermic reaction that transfers light energy to chemical potential energy…
what are nitrates and why do plants need them
ions containing nitrogen and oxygen
found in soil, plants need them to produce amino acids
factors affecting rate of photosynthesis
temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity and amount of chlorophyll
what is chlorophyll and where is it found
green pigment in leafs that absorb light energy for photosynthesis - found in chloroplasts
what is glucose used for in plants(hint - 5)
- converted into starch for storage
- producing fats and oils(lipids) for storage
- producing cellulose which strengthens the cell wall
- producing amino acids - used for protein synthesis in the ribosomes
- used for respiration
word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water + (light energy) → glucose + oxygen
NOTE —>
chlorophyll and sunlight are catalysts in the reaction (on the arrow)
symbol equation for photosynthesis
6 CO2 + 6 H2O → C6H12O6 + 6 O2
NOTE —>
chlorophyll and sunlight are catalysts in the reaction (on the arrow)
what is the chemical symbol for glucose
C6H1206
what is oxidation
reacting with oxygen
what causes fatigue
a build up of lactic acid causes fatigue
what is oxygen debt and what causes it
after exorcise , the lactic acid build up causing an extra need for oxygen
it is the amount of extra oxygen needed to react with lactic acid in muscles and remove it from cells
what is lactic acid
chemical produced from incomplete oxidation of glucose (anaerobic respiration)
how are proteins in plants made
by combining glucose with nitrate ions (oxygen and nitrogen ions) from the soil to make amino acids which are then joined together to make protiens
glucose + nitrate = amino acids
amino acids+ amino acids = protein
anaerobic respiration word equation in plants
(fermentation)
glucose ⟶ ethanol + carbon dioxide
