B4 Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water –> glucose + oxygen
Where in the cell does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts
What type of reaction is photosynthesis (exothermic or endothermic)?
Endothermic ? needs energy from the light from the sun.
What 4 things affect the rate of photosynthesis (limiting factors).
Temperature, light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, amount of chlorophyll
If 12 bubbles of gas are produced in 4 minutes what is the rate of photosynthesis in bubbles per minute?
12 divided by 4 = 3 bubbles per minute
State 3 ways that the plant uses the glucose produced in photosynthesis.
E.g. for respiration, to make proteins, to make the cellulose cell wall, store as starch
What minerals are absorbed from the soil by plants?
Magnesium and nitrate (for chlorophyll production and growth).
What is the word equation for respiration?
Glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
Where in the cell does respiration happen?
The mitochondria
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen (releases less energy)
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose –> lactic acid
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast cells (fermentation to make bread and alcohol)?
Glucose –> Ethanol + carbon dioxide
What happens to the body during exercise when it needs more energy?
Increased ? heart rate, breathing rate, breath volume.
Why does the heart rate, breathing rate and breathing volume increase during exercise?
To get more oxygenated blood to the muscles.
What happens if the muscles can?t get enough oxygen?
They do anaerobic respiration but that makes lactic acid.
