B4 Flashcards
Red Blood Cells
Pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to the cells where it is needed.
White blood cells
Form antibodies against microorganisms
Platelets
Help the blood clot at the site of a wound
Plasma
An ionised gad which sufficient energy is provided to free electrons from atoms or molecules and to allow both species of ions and electrons to coexist.
Arteries
Carry blood away from your heart to the organs of your body
Veins
Carry blood away from the organs towards your heart.
Capillaries
Enable substances (oxygen and glucose) to diffuse easily out of your blood into cells.
Heart
Is an organ that pumps blood around a body
Heart Valves
Keep the blood flowing in the right direction
Stents
Can be used to keep narrowed or blocked arteries open.
Statins
Reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.
Phloem-moving food
phloem tissue transports the sugars made by photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Xylem- moving water and mineral ions
Carries water and mineral ions form the soil around the plant to the stem and the leaves.
Guard Cells
Are cells surrounding the stoma. They help regulate the rate of transpiration by opening and closing the stoma.
Stomata
Open and close to allow the intake of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen.
Bronchi
Are extensions of the windpipe that shuttle air to and from the lungs.
Tranchea
The trachea serves as a passageway to allow passage of air from the region of the voice box to the main respiratory channels (bronchi) which enter the lungs.
Alveoli
Gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in the alveoli
Right atrium
has thin walls
artery
Carries blood to the lungs
Aorta
Carries blood around the body
Valve
Stops blood going back to the atrium.
Left ventricle
has very thick walls; pumps blood to the
body except the lungs.
Right ventricle
has thick walls; it pumps blood to the lungs
