B10 Human Nervous System Flashcards
Homeostasis
Regulation of the conditions of a cell or organisms to maintain optimum condition, for function it response to changes
What do Control System have
Receptors, co-ordination centres, and effectors
Reflex actions
Automatic and rapid and do not involve conscious parts of the brain.
Involves sensory, relay and motor neurones.
Control everyday bodily functions
Stages of reflex arc
Stimulus –> Receptor –> Sensory Neurone –> Relay Neurone –> Motor Neurone —> Effector –> Response
Cerebral Cortex (Brain)
Concerned with consciousness, intelligence, memory and language
Cerebellum (Brain)
Concerned with coordinating muscular activity and balance
Medulla (Brain)
Concerned with unconscious activities (e.g Breathing)
Brain
Made up off billions of interconnected neurones that control complex behaviour
Eye
A sense organ containing receptors in the retina that are sensitive to light intensity and colour
Cornea
Lets light in and refracts light towards the retina
Iris
Controls the size of the pupil and amount of light entering the eye
Optic Nerve
Carries impulses from the retina to the brain
Accommodation
Process of the shape of the lens of the eye to focus on near or distant objects
Nervous System
Uses electrical impulses to enable you to react quickly to surroundings and coordinate your behaviour
Sclera
Tough and strong layer, which protects the eyeball
