B4+ Flashcards
What is a transect
A straight line That runs through a location upon which data on organism distribution can be recorded
Anaerobic respiration word equation (human)
Glucose ➡️ lactic acid (+energy)
Anaerobic respiration word equation (plant and some microbial cells e.g yeast)
Glucose ➡️ carbon dioxide + ethanol + (energy released)
Aerobic respiration equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ➡️ 6H2O + 6CO2
What is active transport
The movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to high concentration. This uses energy because it happens against the concentration gradient. Requires energy from cell.
E.g absorption of nitrates by plant roots
Osmosis example
Water into plant roots
Diffusion example
CO2+O2 in and out of cells during photosynthesis
What happens if a plant is deficient in nitrates
Small plant with yellow older leaves
What happens if a plant is deficient in phosphate
Poor root growth + purple younger leaves
What happens if a plant is deficient in potassium
Yellow leaves with dead bits
Why do enzymes denature and what happens when they do
As you increase the temperature the rate of reaction increases as the enzymes and substrates vibrate more, causing more collisions. But above a certain temperature the proteins unravel and break apart, they become denatured. (Bonds break if the temperature/pH is too high, the substrate cannot fit into it)
What is saturation
When the number of enzymes exceeds the number of substrates the rate of reaction no longer increases.
MITOCHONDRIA
Power plant of the cell
Contains enzymes that are responsible for aerobic respiration
NUCLEUS
Contains DNA
CYTOPLASM
Site of reactions
Photosynthesis in plant cells+contains chlorophyll
