B3.3 Flashcards
What temperature does your body work best at and what do we consider it being called?
37 degrees celcius and it is considered at being the optimum temperature
What can small temperature changes lead to?
It can lead to the body not working as efficiently
What happens when you get too hot
Body hairs lower
Sweat glands produce sweat
Blood vessels supplying capillaries widen
What happens when you get too cold
Body hairs rise
Sweat glands stop producing sweat
Blood vessels narrow
Shivering
What is glucose
An energy store
What happens after you eat
The glucose eaten by digestion passes into the blood stream which causes sugar levels to drop so it can stop cells from repairing effectively
What is insulin
When blood sugar Levels are too high this is detected by the pancreas which releases the hormone insulin. Insulin travels in the blood to the liver. This stimulates the liver to turn glucose into glycogen by a series of enzyme controlled reactions. Glycogen is then stored into the liver. As there’s less glucose in the blood the blood sugar levels fall
What happens when the blood glucose concentration is too low
The pancreas releases another hormone called glucagon.
What is type one diabetics
People who have type one diabetics can’t produce insulin. Normally begins in childhood. It is controlled by injections of insulin. They must also eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly
What is type two diabetics
They can’t effectively use insulin. The person’s cells don’t respond properly to insulin. It normally occurs later in life and links to obesity.
